Do you have plans for the Footy Final? Regardless of who you cheer for, this is a great way to entertain the troops and add a bit more colour into your Footy Final weekend. These footy dogs are actually quite a fun thing to make to feed your mates (and their kids!) and are also a great option for a birthday party or sleep over where you have a number of little mouths to feed.

Ingredients
250 gram Beef Sausage Mince-Or any sausage mince of your choice
1 Onion, diced
1.25 cups Almond meal
1 Egg
1 tbsp Lemon zest
1 tbsp Parsley
1 tbsp Tomato Sauce
8 Hot Dog rolls
Directions
- Dice onion, parsley and zest lemon.
- Place onion, parsley, lemon, eggs,almond meal and sausage mince in a large mixing bowl and using your hands (yep messy we know but honestly it’s the best way to do it) mix it together until thoroughly combined.
- Mold a handful of mix into a small ‘hot dog’ like shape and set aside. I put them on baking paper that way they don’t stick.
- Heat frypan over medium to high heat, add 4 ‘Footy Dog’ sausages to the pan, quickly turning so all sides brown well. You shouldn’t need to add any oil to the pan as the sausage mince will be moist enough and as you keep turning them often they won’t stick either.
- Cook sausages for about 6-8 minutes until golden brown all over. Set aside on paper towel and cover with GLAD Foil to keep warm. Repeat until all sausages are done.
- Add to a bun and serve with a drizzle of either tomato, BBQ and mustard sauce and even a sprinkle of grated cheese if you feel fancy. Pop under the grill for 3 minutes if you want to melt the cheese.
Notes
- Footy Dogs are suitable for freezing either uncooked or cooked. Freeze in sandwich sized GLAD Snap Lock Bags for up to 4 months. You should be able to fit 4 sausages per bag.
- Buy your sausage mince in bulk and double the recipe. You can cook one half tonight and freeze the other half for an easy mid-week dinner at a later date.
- When freezing remember to label and date each reseal bag and to rotate your frozen goods in your freezer. This way you can easily see what it going to expire first and include it into your weekly meal plan, reducing waste and saving your hard earned $$!
- You can also keep the leftovers in the fridge for up to three days (cooked) or overnight (uncooked) in a GLAD Snap Lock Sandwich Sized Bag.
Another great thing about making your own sausages is that you know exactly what is in them. You can alternate flavours according to what each person likes and fill them with various herbs and spices. Making your own sausages, especially when buying the mince in bulk will also save you quite a bit at the checkout. You will also be avoiding many of the preservatives and additives (especially sulphites) found in commercial sausages. It’s always a good feeling knowing exactly what you are feeding your friends and family.
Our Footy Dogs are easy to whip up and oh so cute. However, they can also be used in several other meals later on in the month. Simply freeze the leftovers, either cooked or uncooked, and you’ve got a number of different options including slow cooker sausages, sausages and gravy, or even on a bed of rice.
