There are some foods that science agrees are guaranteed to make you fart, so choose to embrace or avoid them depending on your sensibilities. Beans aren’t as bad as you might think, but cruciferous vegetables (like cabbage and broccoli), eggs, red meat, dairy, garlic and foods high in fibre or yeast are guaranteed to make you toot.

If you’re worried about the smell of your gas, there are solutions. A company called Shreddies makes underwear that feathers ‘charcoal-lined pads’ which are designed to lessen the smell of your pungent wind. Another inventor, a Frenchman named Christian Poincheval, invented a pill that makes human farts smell like roses or chocolates.

If you’ve got fart problems, and you can’t really see yourself buying fart-suppressing undies or taking pills to hide them, nature does have other options. Eating foods like peppermint, yoghurt, ginger, pumpkin, fennel and cardamom can help to reduce your flatulence.

This might be hard to believe, but there are people who fart for a living. Their official title is ‘flatulists’ and there have been a few. One of the most famous was a Frenchman known as Le P�tomane, or the Fartomaniac. He impressed audiences by farting on stage and having the ability to mimic the sound of cannon fire and thunderstorms. A man by the name of Mr. Methane even went on Britain’s Got Talent to try his wind at the title, but didn’t make it.
