Did you know the word Picnic comes from 17th Century France, ‘pique-nique’? Which roughly translates to ‘potluck’.
Who doesn’t love a picnic?? Especially in the summer! However, organising what food to bring and then packing it to travel is quite tricky.
Here’s a tip: Create a menu first! Take in consideration the occasion, the temperature as to where you are going and the travelling time. If you will be travelling over four hours (groan!!) – perhaps avoid dishes with eggs as they can spoil very quickly if not kept at a minimum temperature. Here are some foods that can be pre-prepared, will stand up to an hour (or perhaps more) of travelling time and will still taste great at the end!
Salads:
Most salads actually travel quite well – ever the ‘wetter’ types of salad like Coleslaw. – The good thing is you can seal them in a old takeaway container or similar and they will be just fine. – Store them in an esky for the car trip – they are best served cool.
So these are what we love bringing whenever we go on picnics with family and friends.
