Christmas Sugar Cookies are a traditional American Christmas recipe.

They are sweet and buttery with a crisp outside. They are perfect to use with cookie cutters then decorated with royal icing.

Ingredients

  • 185 gram Butter

  • 1 cup Caster Sugar

  • 1 number Egg

  • 1 number Egg yolk-(extra)

  • 2 tsp Vanilla extract

  • 2.5 cups Flour

  • 1 tsp Custard powder

Directions

  • Beat together the butter, vanilla extract and caster sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the plain flour, custard powder, egg yolk and egg and mix until the dough is combined.
  • Lightly knead the dough and wrap in plastic wrap and place in the fridge for half an hour.
  • Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
  • Roll out the dough (it’s easier to roll it out between two pieces of baking paper) until nice and thin.
  • Use cooking cutters to cut out the required shapes.
  • Place on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake for 10 minutes or until golden.
  • Decorate as desired!  These also make great Christmas gifts!
  • Recipe Tips and Hints:
  • Christmas Sugar Cookies dough is suitable to freeze for up to two months. Roll into a ball or log and cover with plastic wrap.

    Would these work with Nutelex substituted for the butter? I have someone with a dairy and soy intolerance in my house.

    How far in advance can I cook these as I want to give out Xmas day for small gifts an may be pressed for time in couple of days leading up to Xmas, thanx ‘)
