There are women who plan their outfits the night before.
They steam things. They coordinate accessories. They know exactly which shoes are going with which bag.
And then there are the rest of us, standing half-dressed in front of the wardrobe at 7:42am while somebody yells that they can’t find their other sock.
This is where the humble graphic tee earns its keep.
A good graphic tee is basically the wardrobe equivalent of adding seasoning to dinner. You can put it with things you already own, make very little effort, and somehow the whole situation looks more intentional.
It can also save a wardrobe full of plain jeans, black pants and leggings from looking like you have quietly given up.
Sydney label Lonely Kids Club has been making graphic tees since 2011, with its range covering original artwork, Australiana, internet humour, pop culture, artist collaborations and plenty of things that make you go, Okay, that’s weirdly specific and I want it.
The tees are printed to order in Sydney rather than being produced in enormous batches, which means the shirt itself can do a lot of the interesting work while the rest of your outfit stays gloriously uncomplicated.
So if your current styling method is approximately top + bottom + whatever shoes are nearest the door, here are five very achievable ways to make a graphic tee work harder.
1. Graphic Tee + Jeans: The Outfit That Refuses to Die
There is a reason jeans and a T-shirt have survived decades of questionable fashion decisions.
They work.
But there is a difference between wearing a tee with jeans and making a tee-and-jeans outfit look deliberately put together.
The easiest trick is to play with shape.
If your T-shirt is fitted, try it with straight-leg, wide-leg or relaxed jeans. If your tee is boxier or oversized, slimmer jeans can balance out the extra volume.
Then choose your level of tucking commitment.
A full tuck gives you more waist definition. A little front tuck says, Yes, I thought about this outfit for at least eleven seconds.
Leaving it loose is perfectly fine too.
Try a graphic that does the work for you
When the rest of your outfit is simple, the tee gets to be the interesting bit.
The Get In The Van Tee is exactly the sort of piece that works with basic denim because you really don’t need much else happening.
It comes in multiple colours and fits, including regular, oversized and Maple styles, so you can decide whether you’re going for neat, relaxed or please do not ask me to wear anything fitted today.
Another easy option is the Swoopy Boy Tee, featuring an Australian magpie design by artist Claire Harrison.
Which means your outfit can quietly acknowledge one of Australia’s most terrifying seasonal villains while you go about your day.
Jeans.
Sneakers.
Bag.
Graphic tee.
Nobody needs to know you got dressed while supervising toast.
2. Go Oversized Without Looking Like You Lost a Fight With Your Husband’s Wardrobe
An oversized graphic tee can be one of the most useful things in your wardrobe.
But there is a very fine line between deliberately oversized and I appear to be wearing the emergency shirt from the back of the car.
The secret is proportion.
If your top is big and loose, keep at least one other part of the outfit a little more streamlined.
Try an oversized tee with leggings, bike shorts, straight-leg jeans, fitted midi skirts or denim shorts.
And before automatically buying an ordinary shirt three sizes larger, look for something actually designed with an oversized cut.
The LKC Stars Oversized Tee, for example, is made specifically with a wider boxy fit, dropped shoulders and heavier cotton.
That matters.
One looks intentionally relaxed.
The other can look like you’re waiting for your actual clothes to come out of the dryer.
Quick styling fix: if the oversized shape starts swallowing you whole, tuck a small section of the front into your waistband.
Tiny adjustment. Weirdly effective.
3. Add a Jacket and Suddenly You Have an Outfit
Possibly the greatest fashion trick ever invented is putting a jacket over something very basic.
You could be wearing the same tee and jeans you wore to buy milk yesterday, but add a blazer and suddenly you appear to have plans.
A relaxed blazer works particularly well because the two pieces balance each other.
The blazer says:
Responsible adult.
The T-shirt says:
But let’s not get carried away.
You can also use a denim jacket, cardigan, lightweight trench or leather-style jacket depending on the weather.
This is where the funny tees really shine
Something slightly ridiculous underneath a polished jacket stops the outfit looking too serious.
The K Is For Kangaroo Tee is a particularly Australian example. It’s part of a collaboration with The People’s Republic of Couch and is available in everything from regular and Maple cuts to oversized and long-sleeve options.
Put that underneath a neutral blazer and suddenly you have:
Polished jacket.
Silly shirt.
Functioning member of society.
It is called range.
4. Wear Your Graphic Tee With Something Unexpected
Graphic tees are usually mentally filed under casual, which is why we automatically reach for jeans.
But they can look even better when you pair them with something slightly dressier.
Try tucking one into wide-leg tailored pants, a midi skirt, linen trousers, a satin-style skirt or high-waisted shorts.
This works because you’re mixing casual and polished pieces instead of making every part of the outfit say exactly the same thing.
It can also rescue all those nice skirts sitting in your wardrobe waiting for an invitation.
She has waited long enough.
Use colour from the graphic
An easy styling trick is to pull one colour from your tee and repeat it elsewhere.
Maybe the graphic has pink in it, so you add pink earrings.
Maybe there’s green, so you carry a green bag.
Or perhaps you do absolutely none of this because someone has just informed you they need cardboard for a school project that was apparently assigned three weeks ago.
Both approaches are valid.
The I Do Not Am Tee comes in colours including Carolina blue, black, ecru, bubblegum, acid wash and white, so it can bring a bit of colour into a wardrobe that has slowly become fifty shades of safe neutral.
5. Let Your Tee Actually Say Something About You
This is where graphic tees are more fun than ordinary basics.
A plain white shirt tells us very little about you.
A T-shirt featuring your dog drawn slightly terribly?
Now we’re getting somewhere.
The Badly Drawn Pet Tee lets you upload a photo of your pet and have Lonely Kids Club’s illustrators turn them into a deliberately wonky custom portrait.
Dog, cat, bird, horse, lizard, rat — apparently no small household creature is safe from becoming clothing.
And importantly, the brand says the portraits are hand drawn by its illustrators rather than generated using AI or simply run through a photo filter.
This is exactly why graphic tees can work so well in a simple wardrobe.
You don’t necessarily need complicated outfits if the thing you’re wearing already has character.
Keep everything else fairly quiet:
neutral denim, black trousers, a simple skirt, sneakers and minimal jewellery.
Then let the shirt do the talking.
Bonus Fashion Fix: Pick the Fit Before You Pick the Size
This is one of those boring fashion tips that turns out to be extremely useful.
Don’t assume every T-shirt labelled “medium” is going to sit the same way.
Lonely Kids Club offers several different cuts across its range, including regular, Maple, crop, oversized and long-sleeve styles on selected designs.
So before deciding you need to size up or down, look at the actual cut.
Want something longer and relaxed through the shoulders? Try regular.
Want deliberately loose and boxy? Go oversized.
Want something shorter through the body and sleeves? Look at the Maple cut.
Sometimes your body isn’t the problem.
The shirt is just shaped weirdly for you.
Fashion has blamed women for enough things already.
The Real Fashion Fix? Stop Saving Clothes for the Right Occasion
One of the strangest things we do with clothes is buy something we really like and then immediately decide it is too nice, too bold or too interesting to wear on an ordinary Tuesday.
Then we continue wearing the same four things while the nice clothes slowly become archaeological artefacts in the back of the wardrobe.
Graphic tees are useful because they don’t require an occasion.
You can wear one to school drop-off with leggings.
You can tuck it into jeans for lunch.
You can throw a blazer over it for work.
You can wear it with a skirt for dinner.
You can wear it around the house while answering emails and pretending you aren’t eating your child’s leftover afternoon tea.
The point isn’t to create complicated outfits.
It is to own clothes that make getting dressed easier.
And if one funny, colourful or slightly weird T-shirt can make your jeans feel like an actual outfit again?
That is a fashion fix we can get behind.
