When Debbie Hatumale-Uy started her crafting journey three years ago, she was just another mum trying to balance creative passion with the demands of family life.
Little did she know that her late-night crafting sessions and countless questions about vinyl and heat transfer would lead her to an international partnership with one of the world’s largest crafting manufacturers.
Debbie’s journey began humbly, piecing together small projects while Googling answers and joining online crafting communities.
Fast forward to today, she’s not only the founder of Only the Sweet Stuff (OTSS), an Aussie crafting community with a following of over 20,000 across social platforms, but also a thriving businesswoman who has built OTSS into a hub for crafting inspiration, high-quality materials, and education.
Beyond her advocacy for premium crafting products, Debbie has turned OTSS into a platform that empowers others to turn their creative passions into side hustles and businesses.
A Tour Like No Other
Recently, Debbie became the first person ever invited inside the HTVRont and LokLik factory in Guangzhou, China. Known for their cutting-edge crafting materials and machines, HTVRont extended this rare invitation because of Debbie’s influence in the crafting world and her commitment to using the best products for her community.
“It was mind-blowing to see the intricate process behind the products I’ve been using and recommending for years,” Debbie recalls.
“Meeting their engineers and quality assurance team felt surreal.”
The factory tour was more than just a behind-the-scenes peek. Debbie saw firsthand how machines and materials are tested to withstand diverse climates and conditions.
From the freezing tundras of Russia to the sweltering heat of Alice Springs, HTVRont designs their products to withstand the most extreme climates.
Debbie was amazed by the rigorous testing process, which ensures every machine and material performs reliably, no matter the environment.
“The factory manager explained that the machines are meticulously engineered to endure everything—from the harshest cold to the hottest, driest conditions—ensuring crafters around the globe can rely on them,” Debbie shares.
“The dedication to detail and innovation in every product is truly impressive.”
Connecting Creativity Across Borders
One of the most remarkable aspects of the trip was how creativity transcended language and cultural barriers.
“Even though we spoke different languages, we connected through crafting,” Debbie shares.
“It was like speaking the universal language of creativity.”
HTVRont’s team recognised Debbie’s expertise not just as a crafter but as someone who understands the end-user experience.
“They called me an expert in the user journey, which felt both surprising and deeply rewarding,” she says with a laugh. Her feedback and insights are now part of ongoing discussions about product development.
The Business of Creativity: Growing Only the Sweet Stuff
What started as a simple crafting outlet has become a multi-faceted business for Debbie. Under her leadership, Only the Sweet Stuff has introduced a range of thoughtfully curated blanks and crafting materials, offered hands-on crafting classes, and cultivated a thriving online community.
With a focus on helping mums and other aspiring entrepreneurs, OTSS also empowers its members to transform their creative hobbies into viable side hustles.
“Crafting isn’t just about making things; it’s about building confidence, creating opportunities, and sharing ideas,” Debbie explains.
By listening to her community and aligning with industry leaders like HTVRont, she ensures that OTSS remains a trusted resource for crafters at every stage of their journey.
Empowering Mums Through Crafting
Debbie’s story isn’t just about crafting; it’s about believing in yourself and taking chances.
“I never thought I’d be here,” she admits. “But it’s proof that with passion and a bit of courage, you can turn a hobby into something life-changing.”
Her advice to other mums juggling family and business dreams?
“Start small, ask questions, and lean into the community around you. You never know where it might take you.”
Debbie’s journey from a stay-at-home mum to a global crafting partner is a testament to what’s possible when creativity meets determination.
Through her partnership with HTVRont and the growth of Only the Sweet Stuff, she continues to inspire and support her crafting community, showing that sometimes, the best businesses start with just a simple idea at home.
