The Science Behind Natural Cold and Flu Remedies

If you’re like me, then you’re not a scientist and medical labels read like a foreign language, a confusing slang of gibberish that you pretend to understand – but only because the word natural and organic is thrown in there every now and again!

It seems every flu season a new “home cold remedy” is released, and we jump on the bandwagon to keep our children from catching the sniffles. We get so confused with these labels, who knows what works, and what is good for our children or not.

Never fear though, a wonderful New Zealand company, Kiwiherb, has taken the guess work away for us, introducing a unique range of children’s herbal formulations specifically for fighting the flu. Kiwiherb products have been specifically formulated for infants and children, and features products for coughs and colds, colic, teething and nappy rash. Kiwiherb products are made entirely from natural ingredients and are designed to taste great for even the fussiest child.

But for those, like me, who still find the natural labels a mystery, here is a little know-how so you can help keep your children healthy during the cold months.

Echinacea

Echinacea works to strengthen the defence mechanisms which protect the body against bacterial attacks and viruses. Its anti-bacterial effect makes it a good herb for treating many viral and bacterial infections.Kiwiherb Children’s Echinature is the essential immune product for children, made from premium certified organic Echinacea root, in a base of organic apple juice with natural orange flavour.Being in a convenient liquid form, Children’s Echinature is great for children who can’t swallow tablets, and it also allows for greater dosage flexibility.

NaturalOrange Oil

Although not as antibiotic as lemon, orange oil still has some value in fighting flu, colds, and breaking up congested lymph. The aroma of oranges is a favourite of children, and they will usually be more enthusiastic about treatment when it is included. Orange oil can be used effectively on the immune system, as well as for colds and flu and to eliminate toxins from the body.

Organic Manuka honey

Honey contains antioxidant, antibacterial and antimicrobial properties which fight against the virus, bacteria and fungus to treat the cold and its symptoms. It helps to soothe your sore or scratchy throat naturally and relieves irritation. It is an immune booster which not only reduces the severity of cold but also prevent future colds and other viruses.

Apple Cider Vinegar

While it’s highly acidic, apple cider vinegar actually helps the body to keep pH levels balanced, which can help prevent colds and flu germs from getting cozy in your nose and chest. A properly alkalised body is unappealing to germs.

Organic Marshmallow Extract

When most people hear marshmallow, they think of the white fluffy food treat commonly roasted at campfires. Marshmallow, however, is also a type of herb. Marshmallow works as a gentle soothing agent, producing a thick sticky substance (mucilage) that coats membranes. Marshmallow extract contains flavanoids, which contain anti-inflammatory properties. Kiwiherb’sChildren’s Cough and Chest Syrupcontains marshmallow extract, andis a delicious tasting, certified organic formula specifically designed for children 3-12 years old. This formulation contains herbs traditionally used for the relief of coughs and to help ease catarrh of the upper respiratory tract.

Elderflower

Both a traditional remedy and a well studied modern medicine, elder flower helps to relieve the symptoms of a cold. It is safe even for very small children, and is remarkably gentle. They have antioxidant properties and an antiviral effect, which is why they’re still popularly used to help fight off colds and flu. Kiwiherb’sDe-Stuff for Kids is made from certified organic Elderflower, Ribwort and Echinacea root, this formula can be used for infants and children 0-12 years old and may aid in the relief of catarrh and congestion of the upper respiratory tract.
