How To Make Plain White Icing

Decorative cake with lit candles shaped as the number 10, perfect for a 10th birthday celebration.

This recipe for Plain White Icing is my go to when I’m out of time (and money).

We have several icing recipes in our site but this one’s a favourite!

I’m forever making cakes for birthdays or some kind of celebration. I do enjoy mixing it up when it comes to the icings. But when you’re a mum and so busy, you always go for the basic recipes simply because of how convenient it is.

We use our icing recipes for toppings on cakes and cupcakes and sometimes to pipe with.

Ingredients

  • Plain Icing

  • 2 cups Icing Sugar-sifted

  • 2 tbsp Milk

Directions

  • Add sifted icing sugar to a bowl and gradually add the milk until you achieve the required consistency.

Notes

  • Basic Icing Recipes are not suitable to freeze.
  • These can be made a day or two ahead of time, but they tend to go hard when you store them in the fridge. Leave them out of the fridge until room temperature and then stir until a smooth consistency.
  • PLEASE NOTE: You may need a little more milk than is specified.

Cant wait to try these out.

Just wanting to know, how do i make the cream cheese icing – chocolate? I have the chocolate beetroot cake in the oven at the moment and it suggests this icing.

    Thank you

You could try adding some melted chocolate or cocoa powder?
