A brave mum has saved her five-year-old son’s life after pulling his head from the mouth of a mountain lion in the US.
Pitkin County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Buglione said that the mother, whose name was not released, told police that she heard�screaming on Saturday evening�while her son�was playing with his brother outside their home near the Colorado resort town of Aspen.
She immediately�ran outside and found a mountain lion on top of her son in their front yard. She then�grabbed a paw and lifted it up, and put her right hand in the wild animal’s mouth to pry it open and dragged her son’s head out of its mouth, before the animal ran off.
The boy was taken to a Denver hospital after suffering deep cuts to his face, head and neck. He is now in fair condition. The mother also had bite marks on her hand and scratches on her leg. She was treated and released.
The mountain lion was estimated to be about two years old and not fully grown and previously had been seen in the area where the attack occurred.
Pitkin County sheriff’s deputies and a Forest Service Ranger were the first to arrive and killed the lion believed to be responsible for the attack after they found it wandering near the home, several hours after the attack. They have also�killed a second mountain lion nearby.�Both animals will undergo a necropsy to determine if the lions were hungry, diseased or just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
State wildlife officials said that Colorado is home to about 4500 mountain lions that sometimes go into urban areas looking for food.
