This is the heartwarming moment a colour-blind ten-year-old boy bursts into tears after seeing the world in colour for the very first time.

Xavier McCoury from Charlotte, North Carolina could not contain his happiness as his surroundings came alive in vibrant colours, thanks to his ‘miracle’ glasses that enabled him to see the full colour spectrum.

In time for his tenth birthday, Xavier received the special glasses as a gift.

In a video, an excited Xavier can be seen smiling as heopened the box, but as he puts the glasses on, Xavier immediately tears up as he looks around the beauty of his surroundings, and his mother Melissa hugs him.

When his family asked what can he see, Xavier quickly responds: “Colour!”

Wide-eyed and overwhelmed, Xavier then gets up and looks around at his green surroundings, taking them in after years of only seeing shades of grey, white and black.

Melissa described the emotional moment as a ‘miracle’.

“It’s impossible to describe how much this moment meant to him and the whole of our family.

“We all felt like we had just witnessed a miracle, seeing something we’d all hope for, for so long unfolding before our eyes was just unbelievable.

“He never wants to take the glasses off now, he’s completely fascinated by everything around him,” she said.

Melissa added that they brought along some of Xavier’s favourite things. “We brought out several of his favourite things to show him, such as a baseball, a flag and a helmet, because previously he had no idea what they truly looked like,” she said.

Melissa explained that Xavier was about three years old when she realised he was colour-blind as he wasn’t picking up or distinguishing any colour.

So for his birthday, Melissa said that Xavier’s aunt, Celena offered to get him EnChroma glasses after hearing about it last year. “Thankfully they worked and now there are so many firsts for him. He’s a huge sports fan so we took him to his first baseball game followed by a firework display, the other night. It was an amazing experience for us all,” she said.

Colour blindness is a condition where people are unable to fully ‘see’ certain colours on the light spectrum. It is generally genetic and inherited from one’s mother, although it has been known to affect people as they grow older and age.
