A fatherhas been charged with assault after allegedly brushing his teenage son’s teeth so hard that made hisgums bleed.

It is alleged that the father, from Perth, grabbed the boy by the back of his neck and dragged him to the bathroom, where he then forcibly brushed the teenager’s teeth.

Police said the father is facing three counts of aggravated common assault, but hislawyers are now negotiating to have the charges discontinued.

The father’s lawyer, Nicole Young explained that she finds the charges’extraordinary’. She added that ‘it is legal in Western Australian for parents to apply physical force to correct the child as long as it’s reasonable and proportionate.’

However, apolice spokesperson said officers mustinvestigate all assault complaints.

The father is scheduled to appear in court early next year.
