Back in the olden days when men captured women and made them marry, the strongest friend was taken along to the wedding to fight off any resistance from the bride’s family.  He, the Best Man was also there to protect the bride.  In parts of Europe, during the middle ages it was the legal right of feudal lords to have sexual relations with subordinate women on their wedding night.
