Make Your Own Sugar Wax

With the economy completely going down the drain, who has the money for a $30 or $40 (or more) leg wax?

And even if you think you have the money, ask yourself: Do you really?

With all the other things you could be spending it on, are your legs the highest priority?

Whether or not you can afford to go to a beautician, it never hurts to save some money wherever possible, and now you can do that! Yep, you can make your own sugar wax at home for getting those yeti-like stubbly legs back to pristine, baby-bottom smoothness.

You can also buy waxing kits at a chemist for less than the cost of a beauty treatment, but the homemade wax still comes in cheaper.

Give it a try if you want!

Here’s the recipe:

Preparation time: 45 minutes

You will need…

3 tablespoons lemon juice

3 tablespoons sugar

1 tablespoon water

All you have to do is combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan and heat them gently for about 45 minutes. At this point, the sugar should caramelise and thicken. Take it off the heat and let it cool down. It will thicken even more and you’ll be left with a sticky substance with the same consistency as toffee.

Now – here is where you need to be SUPER CAREFUL not to burn yourself!

Apply a little baby powder to your legs to soak up any excess oil and make it easier for the wax to adhere to the hair. Test the temperature first to make sure you won’t burn your skin and carefully apply it to your leg using a plastic knife or paddle pop stick, pushing in the same direction as the hair is growing.

Now take a small piece of cloth and push it down firmly over the sugar wax, an old flannelette sheet or pillow case is perfect for this.

Take a deep breath, and rip up in the opposite direction that the hair grows, using one quick, smooth motion.

Simple, effective, and oh-so affordable!

There you go! It’s going to be one painful sesh but you know what they say.. Beauty is pain, my friend.

Has anyone used this? How did it go?

Can you store left over wax for later use?

I turned away from home waxing as it was so difficult and messy…but yep it costs a small fortune to have it done by a beautician.

My concern for this would definately b the burning factor. Do you let it cool completely or will it harden and b rendered useless.

Cool it enough to use but not to burn yourself Nat.

Is the lemon juice just for sent or is it really necessary?

      It is necessary Becky.
