3. Candied Popcorn

Candied Popcorn is a yummy snack all year round and makes for a terrific food gift for someone that has everything!  To make it even more special add some nuts such as cashews or macadamias.  Nom nom.

Delicious caramel popcorn in a glass bowl, perfect for homemade festive treats and holiday gift idea.

You Will Need:

  • 1 tbsp Oil (canola)
  • 1/3 cup Popping Corn Kernel
  • 2 tbsp Honey
  • 3/4 cup Sugar, Raw
  • 125 grams Butter

Method:

  1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add the popping corn and cover tightly.
  3. Shake the pan occasionally so the kernels don’t burn.  Kernels should start popping after two to three minutes – when they are finished popping – transfer to a large bowl (careful they don’t burn!!).
  4. Line a baking tray with bake & cooking Paper.
  5. In the same saucepan (wipe residue oil out gently and carefully) mix together the honey, sugar and butter for five minutes or until sugar is dissolved.
  6. Bring the mixture to the boil then simmer without stirring for approximately 6 minutes or until the syrup is caramelised and coloured.
  7. Stir the corn into the syrup and coat well.  Then spread the mixture onto the prepared baking tray and cool for 1/2 hour or until set.
  8. Break into bite size pieces and serve.

Hints and Tips: 

  • Line your baking tray with bake & cooking paper it has a specially designed non-stick coating to ensure your candid popcorn does not stick to the tray and slides off with ease!
  • To create cute little gifts with candied popcorn, add them to a small mason jar. You can purchase these for around 50 cents each at a craft store or bargain store like The Reject Shop. Tie a ribbon or coloured tape in the middle
  • You can also store candied popcorn in the cupboard in snap lock bags. Simply place a small portion in a snack sized bag and you will have a delicious grab and go treat whenever you need perfect for a car trip, for school lunches or for a snack when out and about with the kids.
