7 Tips to Prevent Your Child from Wandering Off

Children are curious by nature but some children are simply too curious for their own good.

If your child loves to explore and has a tendency to wander off, whether you are in the shopping centre, at the park or at a party, then this means you have done something right. They are comfortable and confident enough to explore their world without having to constantly check that you are right by their side. However, confidence aside, it can be very dangerous when young children walk about without you, especially when in a busy area. So here are some tips to prevent your child from wandering off.

When you are walking with your younger children, try to keep them entertained by keeping the conversation going. This will hopefully prevent them from running off. Teach them how to point at the different things rather than running away. Comment of the various things that you can see and keep them engaged in walking with you by asking lots of questions.

2. Explain the Dangers

Point out the different dangers and why running off or wandering away is not a good idea. Explain how it scares mummy and how it makes mummy sad. Make sure they are aware of the dangers of the road and the importance of using the foot path and crosswalks.

3. Discuss the Plan

Before you go out, have a conversation about what is expected of your children. For example, if you are going to the park, then they may be able to run ahead; however, if you are going to the shops, then you may wish them to stay by your side and hold your hand the whole time. Make sure they know what is expected of them and repeat the situation several times.
