Grilled Apple Sandwich

There’s nothing quite like the taste of a freshly grilled sandwich. And while grilled cheese is a classic, have you ever considered a grilled apple sandwich?

This seemingly unlikely combination is a delicious and nutritious breakfast, lunch, or dessert.

Cut a fresh apple into thin rings to make a grilled apple sandwich. Then, spread your favorite type of nut butter on two slices of whole-grain bread. Place the apple slices on one slice of bread and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Next, heat a skillet or panini press and add olive oil. Place the sandwich in the skillet or panini press and cook until the bread is golden brown and the apple slices are tender.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices wholemeal or white sandwich bread

  • 1 apple (e.g. Pink Lady), thinly sliced

  • .5 cup (60g) grated cheddar cheese

  • 1 tbsp butter or margarine

  • .5 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

  • Drizzle of honey (optional)

Directions

  • Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  • Place two slices, buttered side down, on a sandwich press or frypan.
  • Layer apple slices and cheese on top. Sprinkle with cinnamon or drizzle with honey if desired.
  • Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
  • Grill for 3–5 minutes, or until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
  • Slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use raisin bread for a sweet twist.
  • Swap cheese for brie or mozzarella for variation.
  • Great for using up apples near the end of their shelf life.
  • Ideal for lunchboxes when cooled and wrapped.
  • Can be made dairy-free with plant-based cheese and margarine.
