6. Psychiatric Hospital in Parma, Italy
In general, anything abandoned is always a little creepy. Add the psychiatric hospital angle and the creepiness goes up. Add the terrifying shadow paintings by Herbert Bagilone and you’ve got a recipe for a nightmare. With the haunting artwork and the peeling paint, it’s enough to make you scream. Better off staying away from here after dark!
7. Centralia, Pennsylvania
The town of Centralia was a bustling coal community until 1962 when, for reasons we are still unsure of, a fire began in the coal mine beneath the town. Within a few decades, the entire town had to be abandoned as toxic gases and random sink holes threatened the safety of residents. Now, an abandoned community is all the remains, with a meagre few still in protest about the actual danger of the fire that could burn another 200 years.
8. Chapel of Bones, Portugal
What is it with people using corpses in construction, the two just don’t mix. Well, unless you’re really trying to scare the daylights out of them, which is what the Chapel of Bones in Portugal accomplishes. It’s made up of several thousand bodies, and two desiccated corpses hanging from ropes along the walls. Oh, and one of them is a small child.
9. Sanctuary of Tophet, Tunisia
Speaking of children, the Sanctuary of Tophet in Tunisia is home to a few. Actually, there’s about 20,000 children here, or what’s left of them. Their remains, many cremated in urns, are thought to have been sacrifices made between the 4th and 2nd centuries, during hard times to appease the gods. Yikes!
10. Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Italy
Ah, yet more bodies to haunt our nightmares! This Italian catacomb holds around 8,000 mummified bodies, with many hanging eerily on the walls. As well as being an amazing historical records of the Palermo area, the Capuchin Catacombs are also the creepiest tourist attraction ever. Make sure you don’t miss the most recent mummy, two-year-old Rosalia Lombardo who died in 1920.
