Crushed Beetles

Who doesn’t love looking positively stunning in a little black number with some startling red lippy? If this is you, we feel like you should probably be aware that you’ve got crushed beetles on your lips. Beetles, specifically cochineal beetles, are responsible for that crimson red colour in many dyes and cosmetics. The beetles are harvested, soaked in hot water, dried and then crushed before being added to cosmetics. If you’re looking out for it, you’ll find it under the name Carmine. If you can believe it, it’s also a common additive in red food.
