5. They Don’t Like The Idea

For some people, the traditions of marriage simply don’t match up with the modern reality. The idea of being given away from a father to a husband makes people feel uncomfortable. So does wearing a white dress to signify virginity, that for most modern women, hasn’t been present for some time. Other complicated issues like name taking also muddy the waters. Marriage is a startlingly traditional event, and if you’re more of a modern couple, it just might not suit.

6. They Don’t Have Hope

When people start talking bout marriage, it’s inevitable that they start talking about the opposite of marriage: divorce. For many young people, watching their parents go through complicated and emotionally draining divorces leaves them unwilling to take the leap into getting married. There is an added layer of complexity when people are married, and by remaining committed but unmarried, some people feel they’re getting the best of both worlds.

At the end of the day, marriage isn’t really becoming obsolete, but it’s definitely changing. The reasons that people get married have evolved, and society’s conceptions of marriage need to evolve with it.
