Why Every Mum Needs a ‘Sanctuary Space’ (And How to Create One on a Budget)

If your bedroom currently contains a mountain of clean washing, two random kids’ toys and a chair that has not actually been used as a chair since 2022, you are in good company.

Mums have a habit of sorting everyone else out first. The kids’ rooms get storage. The lounge gets tidied because visitors might see it. The kitchen gets cleaned because somebody will need feeding again in approximately seven minutes.

Meanwhile, the bedroom becomes the place where everything without a proper home goes to wait.

That is exactly why it is worth reclaiming. A sanctuary space does not need candles everywhere or a bed that belongs in a fancy hotel. It simply needs to feel like one part of the house where the jobs stop following you around.

Better still, it can be done without spending a fortune.

The laundry chair has to go

You know the chair.

It started life as somewhere to sit. Now it holds jeans that have been worn once, clean washing nobody has folded and possibly a bra that has been there long enough to qualify as furniture.

Start there.

Put away what is clean, wash what is dirty and move anything that belongs elsewhere back to its actual home. Then clear the bedside table and whatever has accumulated on the floor.

Do this before buying storage tubs or baskets. Once the clutter is gone, it becomes much easier to see which bedroom furnishings would genuinely make the space work better.

The point is not to create a bedroom that looks untouched. It is to stop staring at tomorrow’s jobs while trying to fall asleep tonight.

Kick the kids’ toys out

Kids are obviously allowed in the bedroom. Their entire collection of tiny plastic objects does not need the same access.

If cars, dolls, blocks or mystery pieces of plastic wander in during the day, give them somewhere temporary to land near the door. Before bed, that basket leaves the room. This works better than spending every evening hunting for stray toys under the bed.

It also gives the bedroom one clear boundary. The rest of the house may belong to family life, but this room gets to turn back into an adult space at night.

Let the bed do most of the work

Nobody needs to repaint the walls every time a bedroom starts feeling a bit tired. Nor does the furniture need replacing because Instagram has decided bedside tables are meant to look different this year.

The bed takes up a huge amount of visual space, so start there.

Changing the bed linen can make the room feel different without touching anything else. A new quilt cover or fresh sheets can be enough, especially if the rest of the room is kept fairly simple.

For an affordable refresh, KOO Home Store, Australia’s #1 private-label home interior brand, offers coordinated home styling across its home and bedroom essentials. That can make it easier to update a few pieces without accidentally turning a quick bedroom tidy into a full decorating project.

There is no reason to wait until winter is completely over to refresh the bed, either. KOO offers heaps of budget-friendly bedding options as well as blankets and throws. Swap out thick layers for lighter bedding, then add a fresh blanket or throw for those cooler mornings and evenings. This makes the bedroom feel brighter and more seasonal without replacing perfectly good furniture.

And really, most homes have enough furniture to dust already.

Make bedtime feel like bedtime

Bedrooms often stay in daytime mode right until somebody turns off the light. The overhead light is blazing. A phone is glowing next to the pillow. There is washing waiting to be dealt with and somebody has left the hallway light on for reasons known only to them.

A few small changes can make the room feel much quieter at night.

Try switching the main light off earlier and using a bedside lamp with warmer light instead. Clear anything unnecessary from the bedside table so the last thing you see is not a pile of receipts and a permission slip due tomorrow.

If essential oils are your thing, a light scent can become part of the evening routine too. There is no need to make the bedroom smell like an entire lavender farm. Keep it subtle and check that any oils used are suitable for the people and pets in the home.

The aim is to give the room an evening setting, even if the rest of the house is still doing its usual thing.

Give it five minutes instead of fifty

The quickest way to abandon a new home routine is to make it ridiculously ambitious. Nobody needs another nightly checklist with twelve jobs on it.

Give the bedroom five minutes before bed. Clothes go into the wardrobe or hamper. Cups go back to the kitchen. Stray toys leave. The bedside table gets cleared and the bed gets straightened if needed.

Some nights, even that will be too much, but that’s fine. A sanctuary space is not supposed to become another standard that mums have to live up to. It is there to make the end of the day feel easier.

The room can get messy again tomorrow. Kids can wander in for morning cuddles. Laundry will almost certainly attempt another takeover. By bedtime, though, the bedroom can belong to you again.
