Holding the record as the world’s most expensive ruby, and the most expensive coloured gemstone other than a diamond, the Burmese Sunrise Ruby sold in May of 2015 for $30 million. An incredibly rare stone, it is named after a poem from 13th-century Sufi poet Rumi. The Burmese Sunrise Ruby is 25.6 carats, and currently mounted by Cartier on a ring between two diamonds. Currently in the hands of an anonymous buyer, the Burmese Sunrise Ruby is a unique treasure of nature, likely the only one we’ll ever find.

The Pink Star diamond is a perfect example of how much we treasure precious stones. This 59.60 carat stone, rated as Fancy Vivid Pink in colour, broke all the records in November of 2013 when it sold at auction for $83.2 million. But, when the auction was over the buyer had to default on the bid, as he didn’t have the money to pay. The auction house Sotheby’s ended up adding it to their collection.
