What are the most recent developments in birth control? You know the most common methods of birth control are still out there condoms, the birth control pill and abstinence. However, there have been a lot of changes in the past few years and there are a lot of different options out there that you may not even be familiar with. So, if you are considering going back on birth control or are looking into changing to a more modern alternative, then have a look at what the medical world has been cooking up:
The New Age Birth Control Pill
The Permanent Birth Control Method
If you and your hubby are done with the baby making business but don’t want to go down the traditional tubes tying or snip snip methods, then you can look into Essure. Essure is a nonsurgical way to prevent pregnancy. It is a flexible device called a micro insert that is inserted into the fallopian tubes to block fertilization from sperm. You can expect some discomfort but you will generally feel fine after a day or two. However, you may experience light bleeding and studies have only proven its effectiveness for up to three years as it is relatively new. Furthermore, there is a one in seven chance that the procedure may not be effective.
The Easy Option Diaphragm
The diaphragm or cervical cap is another popular form of birth control but can be hard to master. The Lea Shield is a newer version that is very user friendly and prevents sperm from entering your cervix. The shield can be inserted before sex and should be left in place for eight hours after. The Lea Shield comes with a loop to help with insertion and removal but it is fairly new and thus there are not a lot of conclusive results in terms of its effectiveness.
The Patch, the Ring and the Injection
Another option you have is the Ortho Evra Contraceptive Patch. You will wear the patch on your body for three weeks and then remove it for one week to allow for your menstrual period. If you hate the idea of swallowing a pill every day (and can’t seem to remember to do it) then this method of birth control offers a great alternative.
Or, you may be more comfortable with a Vaginal Ring in place, which will need to be inserted every month; however, you can do the procedure at home rather than at your doctor’s office. The vaginal ring, known as the NuvaRing, sits in the vagina and releases synthetic hormones to ‘trick’ your body in the same way oral contraceptive works.
You may prefer to go with an injection such as the Lunelle Injection, which requires you to visit a doctor every month for a shot. The good thing is that you only have to remember one doctor appointment each month rather than remember to take a pill every day but many busy mums have a hard time actually getting to the doctor’s office in between school drop offs, work, groceries and other errands.

There’s also the other injection which is once every 3 months and eventually stops your periods. That’s what I’m on 😉
Implanon hasn’t been mentioned. I have had mine in since my son was 2 day’s old. It lasts 3 years.
DO NOT GET ESSURE!!!! I have had the coils just over a year & have had so many side effects, I have 3 children under 6 & most mornings I don’t even have the energy to get out of bed, my periods have gone haywire, I am so fatigued all the time, & the only way to have them removed them completely is having a hysterectomy, just search Essure on Facebook & join the Essure Complications Australia group if you don’t believe me
oh, I forgot to add, Essure has been on the market since 2010 & there are already 30 women (that I know of) that have gotten pregnant after being told by their doctor that their tubes are fully occluded, not to mention, the original Essure studies done by Concepsus (sp?) were done on the women, then after 3 months the women had hysterectomies anyway, therefore they never got a true overview of if the contraception would actually stop women from getting pregnant
Plz dont get Essure! this device has ruined my life it makes me sick on a daily basis my hair falls I’m weak I can bleed for up to 30 days. My Essure perforated and migrated out of my fallopian tubes and is now stuck in my abdomen muscles and ligaments the doctor say they can’t get it its inoperable. this device stabs me all the time expecially when I laugh or sneeze I feel it cut me and I bleed for days and days the docs all say it’s too small to feel and I say tell me that as its cutting me as I’m talking to you save every woman you know save every woman you love the last 8 years of my life has been hell I have missed out on so many special events with my children and family because I’m always too sick or too weak to do anything plz do anything except Essure it will destroy your life and your family’s .
Essure Procedure- the unknown side affects. I had essure procedure done on the 21st August 2012 after my gyno spoke highly of when i requested for my tubes to be cut n tied. One week after having essure done, thats when my life started going down hil.
After I had the procedure
done, i had some pains in my tummy and lower back, like a bad period
pain. One week later, I started suffering from migraines every day,
my bowels motions went from normal to runny or soft and I needed to
open my bowels between 7 to 8 times a day. Also, my bladder was
affected, had brain fog, forgetfulness, memory loss, shoulder pains,
neck pains, back pains, hip pains, knee pains, night sweats and hot
flushes. Two weeks after having essure procedure done, I was having
more symptoms and they were energy loss, weight gain (gained 22kgs
48.50Ibs within 6 weeks), carpel tunnel syndrome, swollen face,
swollen hands, swollen legs, swollen belly, pains in tubes, ovaries
areas, pain in uterus, my belly was getting bigger like I was
pregnant, nickel taste in mouth, boils and rashes on chin/face and
lower back, eye floaters, body aches, hair loss on head, facial hair
growth, tiredness, white blood count as well as other cell counts
started elevating which were getting higher each month when i had to
have blood tests. Four weeks after essure procedure, depression set
in deeper.
All my symptoms got worst as time we by. Best way to describe how I felt is like an elderly lady in her late 70’s. On 19th July 2013 (age 43yrs), i was rushed to ER
by ambulance to the RHH Tasmania as I was in chronic pain in my
pelvic region and not even morphine would ease the pain. My blood
pressure was very high due to the pain and at the hospital they
asked me am I sure that I’m not pregnant and am I sure that I’m
not in labour! After tests etc, they said my pelvic region is
inflamed and said i need a hysterectomy to remove essure out of my
system. Ten days after being rushed to hospital, I was in surgery
where my tubes, uterus and cervix were taken out because of essure.
My bladder got repaired during surgery as well. I had a 30cm
incision for this surgery. i am now 5 weeks post op and
feel normal again as all the symptoms disappeared within 2 days
after having essure removed. I still have bowel issues which i am on
the waiting list to see a colorectal and i am also on the waiting
list to see a liver specialist as the doctors think my liver may
have been damaged by essure. I have been ripped of 11 months of my
life and my baby didn’t have her real mum since the age of 2mths old
as essure takes your quality of life away. I hope my story saves
many ladies from having essure as I don’t want anyone else suffer
like myself and many other ladies have because of essure. This
device needs to be banned. Please help us spread the word. Thank you
PS- Have a closed group on facebook called Essure Complications Australia and any ladies are welcome to join the group who have or had essure procedure done or of any ladies like to know more about the procedure as we are happy to to tell you our symptoms. Not everyone may have the side affects but it isnt worth the risk
